Alphabet Prints
I have been fascinated by alphabets for over 40 years. The alphabet posters shown here were produced over a 20 year period and constitute the first alphabet series I have produced. These posters depict aspects of rural life that caught my interest. A few are done in a medieval style. I have titled this series The Hill Farm Alphabet. I occasionally add a new poster when inspired to do so.
In 1978, I worked on the Vermont Images Project and designed a set of black and white posters documenting the fast-disappearing life on Vermont hillside farms. After I, completed this alphabet, the Vermont Department of Education printed and distributed a set of posters to every Vermont K-3 classroom. Eventually, these posters became the basis for my first picture book, A Farmer’s Alphabet, published by David R Godine, Boston, MA, in 1981. Remarkably, this book is still in print. In 1999, I completed a third alphabet, The Gardener’s Alphabet, published by Houghton Mifflin, Boston, MA. |
